At Buencafé we know that our planet is a land full of experiences, deserving of all our efforts for its preservation. Our canned packaging highlights our corporate commitment to the environment.
For many years now we have produced coffee in canned packaging. However, the idea took shape in December 2020 when for the first time Buencafé’s special edition coffee Colibrí premiered, a launch that has since sold 10,000 cans of coffee.

Because of its great acceptance and after validating the benefits to the environment, we decided to include this packaging in our portfolio of products for our three business lines, making the necessary adjustments to produce cans directly at Buencafé.

Metal is one of the materials able to be strategically positioned and contribute to the coffee can market. Its use is environmentally friendly as it avoids 6.9 tons of glass in producing 35,000 coffee packages. Additionally, the use of tinplate provides the resistance and durability required for packaging our products. Once the package serves it use, in post-consumption the tinplate can be recycled as many times as necessary without sacrificing its characteristics, incentivizing a circular economy and highlighting the integral Buencafé policy with coffee producers and the community.
“In comparison to glass packaging, the can is lighter, and with respect to the environment, it uses less energy to be produced,” said Jorge Marulanda, Research and Development Engineer.
The circular economy as a pillar of environmental sustainability aims to extend the product lifetime of the elements utilized in industry production. Tinplate adapts perfectly to this use (it’s biodegradable and recyclable). Once the end of the product lifetime is determined, tinplate undergoes a corrosion process, controlled by oxygen and water, that allows it to return to the environment as iron ore, which can be a micronutrient for plants (Juarez, Cerdan, & Sanchez, 2021), or it can be returned to industrial use. Its lifespans are unlimited.
Recovering the metal has a significant impact on the preservation of the environment. Iron cans lead in the ranking of recyclable materials, reducing CO2 emissions by consuming less energy in their production. In Colombia, there are multiple companies dedicated to recovering the metal, reducing its production costs, and more importantly, protecting our biodiversity, water sources, and cultural richness.
Buencafé is committed to environmental sustainability. Our policies work hand-in-hand with the correct use of our habitat, our footprint is in your hands.
