Colombian Coffee Growers Federation awarded in Spain with the Prevencia Prize 2019

The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation received the Prevencia Prize 2019, granted by the Ibero-American Social Security Organization, thanks to its management in the health and safety of the Colombian coffee farmers. 

“This recognition makes us feel proud, because the FNC has worked decisively to improve the health and safety at work of Colombian coffee growers, which includes promoting social protection in the sector”, said the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation General Manager, Roberto Velez Vallejo. 

The 2019 award was focused on the requirements of occupational safety and health in the framework of the new labor relations derived from digitalization and the collaborative economy. In that order, the Colombian Federation posited the paper “Occupational safety and health management in Colombian coffee growing culture”, by the authors Jorge Humberto Devia Sepúlveda, Carolina Pico Noppe and Ligia Helena Borrero Restrepo.

According to Ligia Helena Borrero Restrepo, the prize received will be used in the training of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation in Health and Safety, with the support of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Andean Zone and the Ministry of Labor of Colombia.

The paper presents detailed experiences, preventive practices and specific projects of safety and health, which includes the innovative 50-hour virtual course, endorsed by the Colombian Ministry of Labor, that trains producers in the management of health and safety at work in coffee farms.

The virtual course was designed by the Manuel Mejía Foundation, educational wing of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, and recreate the characters and the situations of a traditional coffee farm that allows to grow safety and health concern and develop new ideas and answers for every case. 

This award certifies the concern of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation for improve not only the safety and health management of the 540000 coffee farmers families in Colombia, but to create new models that can be applied and replied in multiple sector of the local agriculture. 

The jury team, appointed by the General Secretariat of the OISS, was formed by Francisco Javier Pinilla García, director of the Spanish Institute of Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, Alberto Alonso Martín, general director of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health OSALAN of Spain, and Pedro Mariezcurrena, Lawyer and Consultant in Social Security and Prevention of Labor Risks.
